Why Volkswagen Uses A Water-Cooled Exhaust Manifold

The Volkswagen Group loves its EA888 engine, found in the popular models such as the Volkswagen Golf and the Audi A3.

This is the turbocharged inline-4 available as the 1.8-liter or the 2.0-liter and with power outputs ranging from about 170 hp to a bit over 300 hp.

It also has the unique exhaust manifold that is embedded right into a cylinder head. This allows VW to use water cooling to calm down a temperatures of the exhaust gases.

The result? The system improves on the cold starts, warms up a cabin quicker, and reduces wear on the engine itself. And this water-cooling system also allows for colder air entering a turbocharger.
